Libraries' free workshops focus on family finances
Just in time for the holiday "debt hangover," the Pima
County Public Library is launching a six-week, system-wide series
of free workshops to help families better understand and manage
their finances.
Dubbed "Dollars & Sense: Smart Money Management,"
the series has been in the works since summertime, said Mike Marlin,
adult services librarian at the Joel D. Valdez Main Library.
Marlin pulled together all the speakers for the series and compiled
the workshop schedule.
"It came from our director, who has been very much encouraging
having the library be a conduit for literacy issues in general,"
he said.
The library system has been focusing on finances, health and reading
skills as the three main types of literacy to promote, he said.
Over the past few years, several libraries in the system have sporadically
offered various workshops pertaining to managing money, but this
is the first coordinated effort to present a comprehensive series
at the same time across the county, Marlin said.
Depending on the success of the series, the library might do something
similar in the future with health topics, he said.
"This just seemed like a really good time, considering the
economy, considering that credit fraud and predatory lending are
really hot issues," he said.
Specifically, the library system chose to begin the workshops this
month because the gift-giving holidays have just passed and many
people are in debt or having money problems.
At the Kirk-Bear Canyon library, workshops will be presented at
6 p.m. on three Mondays.
The first, "Roadmap to Financial Success," is Jan. 22.
After that, "How to Find a Home and Make an Offer" and
"Raising Financially Responsible Children" will be presented
on Feb. 5 and Feb. 12, respectively.
At the Dusenberry-River Center branch, "Roadmap to Financial
Success" will be offered at 11 a.m. on Jan. 27, a Saturday.
Then at 6 p.m. on Feb. 6, the branch will host "Wills and Probate:
Legal Planning for Incapacity and Death."
No reservations are needed to attend any of the workshops.
